Friends Who Shop Together, Stay Together! Esther Chege and Stella Nasirumbi, Advocates
¨If there were no bad people, there would be no good lawyers.¨ - Charles Dickens
Meet Esther and Sharon. The pair are best friends who come loaded not just with beauty, but brains. They have been friends since high school. Talk about strong bonds, right? Here’s what they had to say about their solid friendship.
Where did the journey of your friendship begin?
Esther: We attended the same high school, university, and even did our internship in the same law firm. We also lived in the same estate. It was a slow start in the beginning and grew to what we have today.
How have you maintained this friendship for such a long time?
Esther: We maintain our distance. In as much as we are friends, we do not get too involved in each other’s business.
Stella: I’d have to say mutual respect. I respect her enough for her to respect me back.
Who introduced whom to Vivo?
Esther: She comes shopping with me to shop, so I guess I’m the one who introduced her.
Stella: I’m her financial advisor when we shop. I have a couple of Vivo items but ultimately, she is the one who discovered Vivo for both of us.
What is your favorite shared memory?
Esther: There is this one time Stella entered us in a competition online. We won. Safaricom sponsored us with a fully paid trip to Naivasha. It was such a wonderful time. The most important part of that trip was when we went to an all-boys children’s home and bought them some gifts. I think that was the highlight for both of us.
Stella: Also, there is that time we had hiked Mt Longonot. That was really fun too.
What’s the one thing you both enjoy doing?
Esther: I don’t think there is one specific thing per se. If something comes up we just go for it and do it. We always end up having a good time.
Stella: More specifically, I would say going to the mall, window shopping and anything to do with interior décor. That always lifts our spirits. We even have an Instagram page featuring interior design called @studiodebutante.
Esther, what would you say is Stella´s best quality?
She is a driven go-getter. When she sets her mind to something, not a single thing will stop her. I admire that about her.
What about you Stella? What is the quality you most admire in Esther?
I thought she was going to say I’m brutally honest because what I wanted to say about Esther is that she is the go-getter. I guess we both are. She is very generous. She goes out of her way to help others.
Friendship is never without its ups and downs. What is it like when you hit a low point?
Esther: To be honest, we rarely have any arguments. I think the fact that we also keep some distance helps. On the rare occasions when we do, we eventually get past it because at the end of the day, that’s what friends do.
What have you learnt about friendship so far?
Esther: If you bring 100% into your friendship and the other person does not, it’s okay to take up that load. It doesn’t always have to be 100%:100%. Some seasons, one person is needier and another time, the other person is the needy one. It’s not about tit for tat. It’s okay to take that load. It’s important, actually.
Stella: I’ve learnt to give and be generous. Esther is a generous giver. This is honestly one of the best things about her. She is there for me no matter what. I hope to get the chance to give to others as I have seen her give countless times.
